A spectacular suit of armor from 17th–18th-century Japan informs the studded design on this backpack. While this type of transportable “folding” armor, or tatami gusoku, was typically sported by low-ranking infantrymen, this particular example in The Met collection boasts gold lacquer detailing and silk brocade lining—unusually luxurious attributes suggesting that it was worn by a samurai.
